Reno, Nevada - The newest “member” of Team HUMMER Racing makes its debut this week at the Best in the Desert Racing Association's 2005 “Vegas to Reno” competition on Friday, October 7. The all-new 2006 HUMMER H3 will make its first attempt at the 500-mile trek and be piloted by off-road racing legend Rod Hall.
This year all three models in the HUMMER lineup, the H1, H2 and H3, will compete in the race. “Winning a debut race in a vehicle is always a long-shot, but we think the H3 will be a solid performer,” according to Hall. “The game plan for this race is to shake down the vehicle, fix the bugs and head to Baja ready for a win.”

The H2 made its off-road racing debut in the 2003 Vegas to Reno race and battled for a fourth place finish. The H2 race team learned quickly, and in the 2004 race last summer, Driver Josh Hall, son of Rod Hall, shaved nearly 10 hours off his previous year’s finish time to take the checkered flag. That was the beginning of a Best-in-the-Desert Race Series six-race winning streak for the H2 team – a winning streak that is still alive as they enter this weekend’s race. The H1 race truck is driven by Rod’s other son, Chad, who has piloted it to four consecutive Baja 1000 wins.

Team HUMMER competes in the Full Stock class, which features production-based vehicles with stock frames, stock suspension designs and production-based engines. Specialized racing shock absorbers, tires and other minor modifications are allowed, along with a litany of supporting components and mandatory safety equipment.

The H2 and H3 teams benefit from the integrated support of GM's development engineering group based at the Desert Proving Ground in Arizona. The close-to-stock configuration of the race vehicle provides engineers an additional method of observing the H2 and H3 in extreme driving situations. Evaluations of the vehicles’ performance provide valuable feedback that can be used in the continual refinement of current products and the development of future HUMMERs. "We can do a month's worth of research in a day," says Thad Stump, H2 development manager and H2 and H3 racing liaison. "We're taking these vehicles to speeds and distances through terrain that the consumer may never see."

The all-new 2006 HUMMER H3 went on sale in May 2005. It delivers authentic HUMMER style and off-road capability in a more approachable and fuel-efficient package. Just as the legendary H1 and H2 did in the full-size segment, the H3 is poised to become a leader in off-road capability among midsize sport utilities.

For more than a decade, Rod Hall and Team HUMMER have piloted HUMMER's into the top spots of some of the off-road racing circuit's most grueling and technical courses, including eight victories at the SCORE Baja 1000 since 1993.
